Empowering our students

BVA Student Services caters to the needs of exceptional learners with 504s, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and Gifted Individualized Education Plans (GIEPs) within our dynamic virtual learning environment. Through the diligent efforts of our specialized online staff members, unique digital programs are offered to students requiring these accommodations. Our virtual platform is designed to seamlessly integrate personalized support, utilizing adaptive technologies, interactive online tools, and customized digital curricula. Whether providing extended time on virtual assessments, offering specialized online resources for gifted learners, or implementing assistive technologies compatible with remote learning, our team ensures that each student's unique needs are met in the digital classroom. This comprehensive approach allows us to maintain the integrity of these important educational plans while leveraging the flexibility and accessibility of our virtual environment.

Young Girl Working

Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) to enable limited English proficient (LEP) students to progress academically while they are learning English.

The LIEP is designed to provide planned instruction to meet each student’s individual needs based on English language proficiency level as identified through multiple criteria in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. ESL specialists collaborate with general education teachers to monitor progress and collaborate on instructional strategies.

High School Student Working

504 plans are designed to support students with disabilities who require accommodations in their learning environment, including virtual settings, but do not need specialized instruction. These plans ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to education by providing specific modifications to the regular classroom setting or procedures, which can be adapted for online learning platforms.

Accommodations in a virtual environment might include extended time on digital assessments, modified screen layouts, or specific assistive technologies compatible with remote learning tools. The goal of a 504 plan in a virtual setting is to level the playing field, allowing students with disabilities to participate fully in their online education alongside their peers.

Teachers working together

BVA provides custom programming for students with Gifted Individualized Education Plans (GIEP) in a virtual environment. Gifted students exhibit advanced levels of thinking that differ in both speed and complexity, and our online platform is designed to accommodate these unique learning profiles. Our virtual gifted and talented program nurtures these students' unique and creative abilities, enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills through interactive digital resources and collaborative online tools. Our specialists evaluate each student's current knowledge and skills remotely, tailoring online instruction and digital curriculum to meet their individual needs and support their growth in the virtual classroom.

Among the options for academically gifted students in our virtual environment are online enrichment activities (example: gifted students coming together in virtual breakout rooms for challenging projects and discussions requiring higher-order thinking skills), digital acceleration (example: accessing advanced math or reading content beyond grade level through our online learning platform), and opportunities for special studies which are inherently supported by technology in our virtual setting (example: enrolled students can easily participate in additional distance learning courses or engage in self-paced, in-depth study of specialized topics using our extensive digital resources).

Brandywine Virtual Academy (BVA) implements a comprehensive Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) designed to cater to the diverse needs of its students. This approach emphasizes data-driven decision-making and collaboration among educators to provide personalized support.

  1. Tier 1: Universal Supports - At this foundational level, all students receive high-quality, scaffolded, standards-based instruction. BVA ensures that its curriculum aligns with Pennsylvania state standards and provides both synchronous and asynchronous learning options to meet different student needs. The synchronous program offers live instruction for elementary and middle school students, while the asynchronous program allows high school students to learn at their own pace.

  2. Tier 2: Targeted Supports - For students requiring additional help, Tier 2 interventions involve more focused instructional strategies. This may include small group sessions, additional tutoring, or specialized instructional materials. These supports are often delivered through virtual office hours, scheduled appointments with teachers, and targeted skill-building courses.

  3. BVA’s MTSS framework is designed to provide continuous support through regular assessment and monitoring of student progress, enabling timely and effective interventions to ensure academic success for all students at BVA.

  4. Tier 3: Intensive Supports - Students needing intensive, individualized assistance receive Tier 3 supports. This involves more frequent and intensive interventions, tailored specifically to address their unique learning challenges. Special education services and consultations with special education liaisons play a critical role at this level, ensuring compliance with educational standards and effective communication among all stakeholders.
